Description
I painted this fantasy illustration of two boys falling while ice skating with their imaginary dog for my children's book called MY BROTHER AND I.
This story is about the sports, games and activities that two brothers enjoy through summer and winter seasons. The boys have a secret wish (well, not so secret) to own a pet so I painted an imaginary dog into all the illustrations for this story. Since this story takes place over a number of years and images of the characters need to be consistent throughout the story, I used photos of our two grandsons as reference when painting these illustrations.
We are very lucky to have two wonderful grandsons upon which this story is based and, like most proud grandparents, we have an endless supply of family photos from which I could extract my references. After painting details of the children, I painted an impressionistic background by splashing watercolor pigment and water into an already wet paper canvas to give the impression of flying snow.
