Description
The Calvary Group is one of two Civil War sculptures at the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial on the western lawn of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. (the other sculpture is The Artillery Group). Henry Merwin Shrady was the sculptor of the entire memorial, which also includes a lofty statue of Grant on horseback. For The Calvary Group he used his own face as the model of the fallen soldier. Shrady, who spent twenty years years creating the memorial, died two weeks before its dedication in 1922.
If you wish to see a photograph of the full Calvary Group sculpture, a photograph of it precedes this one in my gallery and can be accessed by clicking on the above "PREV" (for "Previous").
