The Bipolar Mind

Description
I have several friends who have Bipolar. This drawing is for anyone who endures the effects of this disease and the stigma attached with it and other mental illnesses.
It is depicting the various states of bipolar-mania on the left with its highly increased activity, the feeling that the world is moving slowly around them, irritability, sleeplessness, and increased urges towards risky and self-harmful behaviors. Depression is on the right, with it’s teeth turned inwards, cutting away at the person with feelings of despair, hopelessness, inner darkness, slowed reaction time, and a struggle to make basic decisions that may seem simple to others. Baseline is in the middle, yet some of its relative peace, calm, and joy are part of the other two states..all are intertwined with each other.
A person is not just manic or just depression. There is so much more to a person than there mental illness. I have heard people say about some of my friends “well, they ARE Bipolar”. People are not Bipolar, it is simply a part of them. We would never say that a person “Is” cancer. An illness is an illness. Try to get to know the whole person, not just their illness.

revisiting Sam. I very much appreciate the extended description now and it is so insightful into biploar. I have known some people who have it is well and am familiar with the stigma attached to it. And super interesting how we do to tend to say someone is "bipolar" but we wouldn't say they are "cancer." Insightful work

Revisit 2.0 - expanding on my last post I like the simplicity of this description - it says so much in so few words and leaves the artwork up to interpretation!

😀 I’m very appreciative of your visits and comments on this drawing, Chance, and maybe I shouldn’t add much more to the description

Revisiting - the description is so simple but compelling. The center resembles a face to me, trapped in pain between the two emotions..
