Description
This is a photograph which I am guessing was around 1964 or 1963. As I have said in several descriptions, I come from a large family of 14. I am the skinny girl in the back starting on the left, next is my youngest sister Theresa and starting with the smallest boy on the right side front is my nephew Terry, nephew Teddy and their oldest brother Aubrey Lee who was killed in a hunting accident at around 20 years old and finally my darling baby brother Rocky as we called him "Charles".
Recently one of my older sisters decided to do a quilt with family photographs, she did a set of pillow cases especially for me and used this photograph on the quilt. I smiled and grimaced at the same time when seeing this. I remember the day it was taken because we younger children were not use to being photographed. :-) And this is one of the reasons why if someone points a camera my way I place my hands together in prayer shape, praying for it to be over. which is what I was trying to do with my hands when our brother-in-law took this photo.
I wanted to share some of my story with you through my art and hope that has not bored anyone. Now these nephews along with their three sisters were raised with us. Theresa, Charles and myself are the youngest members of our family. Charles is my fishing buddy and the one who said to me "Girls are silly!" when I asked him to keep baiting my hook with the night crawlers we had dug up. Which he is right, I didn't flinch when picking them up and putting them in a tin can but UGH to stick a hook through them, was to much for me. But he finally convinced me I could do it and even with my eyes closed (A LOT) I managed to get the hang of it.
So this photo was shot in Germantown, Maryland where we lived through my last three years before returning to Rogersville, Tennessee where I was born.
Thank you for visiting my shop and I hope you enjoy a peek inside the Artist childhood.
Blessings, Debra
I forgot to mention that the Baptist Church we attended was close enough for us to walk to each Sunday, it sits behind the woods across the road from where we are standing.
In these woods is a small stream that runs the length of it. This is where I rescued a tiny baby rabbit.
For those of you who don't know, rabbits do make sounds, there was a big black cat ready to pounce on this small baby when I heard its cries of fear, which sound like a human baby. I ran through the woods and followed the cries and chased the cat away and brought the baby home with me. My parents were busy in the back yard making apple butter in a huge black pot when I ran up to my father who was stirring the apple butter. I told him what happened and how much I wanted to keep the baby rabbit and take care of it. He kindly in a sweet and stern voice said, How would you like it if someone took you away from us, now child take that rabbit back where you found it so it can find its own mother.
The lesson was hard but I understood what my father meant and with my head hanging and tears falling for fear of what would happen to the baby when I sit it back in those woods, I returned it but to a different spot.
Childhood should be a time of adventure, fun, joy, learning, right and wrong, and most of all of learning how to love in such a way that when the time comes we can either hold on to or if it is best for the other, let go and let them live their life.
See I told you I was a smart little girl. :-) How I wish... So dreams still live! :-) Blessings
