Description
A female (top) and male black-necked stilt (Himantopus mexicanus) forage for food at low tide near San Francisco Bay on a beautiful Monday afternoon.
These shorebirds inhabit the coastal areas of California, the interior Western United States, and the Gulf of Mexico east to Florida and south through Mexico and Central and South America.
Exceeded only by flamingos, the black-necked stilt has the second-longest legs in proportion to its body of any bird.
"Two are better than one, because they get a good return for their effort. For if they fall, the one will lift up his companion..." Ecclesiastes 5:9-10a, Tree of Life Version - TLV

Are these Avocets? I love the reflection. Great capture. l
Brian Tada replied:
Hi Karen, thanks for your gracious comments! This black-necked stilt is somewhat related to the avocet. According to Wikipedia, both belong to the Recurvirostridae family of birds in the wader suborder Charadrii. The avocet's bill is somewhat curved at the end and it has a unique combination of both black and white wing feathers seen when folded at rest. They have grayish legs, and like the black-necked stilt, their legs are long in proportion to their body for wading in the swamp. Thanks for your visit!
