Description
On a warm autumn afternoon, I visited Tarrytown lighthouse on the east side of the Hudson River near Sleepy Hollow NY. It was the type of day to live up to the town's name, and you just wanted to lie down in the nearby park to enjoy it! The lighthouse was not open on the day of my visit, and a sign to the property said 'closed' although the gate was open. I, along with a few others, walked out to visit this lonely little lighthouseThis lighthouse was originally built offshore in 1883 due to the expense of purchasing the necessarily land. It was the only family station on the lower Hudson, the only conical steel lighthouse on the Hudson to have living quarters within it rather than attached, and the only lighthouse in Westchester County. It remained in service until the Tappan Zee Bridge was completed in 1955 (located 1 mile to the south). The bridge had powerful lights and a foghorn on its center span, rendering the lighthouse obsolete. The light was eventually discontinued in 1961. Over the years an adjoining General Motors plant expanded and filled in much of the space between the lighthouse and the shore, leaving it offshore by only about 50 feet. A footbridge to the lighthouse, seen to the left in the photo, was added in the 1970s. Westchester County purchased the lighthouse, renovated it and opened it to the public on October 1, 1983, exactly 100 years after it first went into service.
