Description
My husband and I had taken a day trip with absolutely no luck. Frustrated, my husband. bored with the lack of photos, chose to sleep on the way down the mountain. Suddenly, I saw this creepy Tarantula crossing the road. I casually asked my husband if he would be interested in photographing a tarantula that was in front of the car. It was not really exciting for me to get out and capture the photos, but I had at least to let him know what was in front of us since we had to wait for this little beast to pass.
Never in my life, have I seen anyone hear such wonerful news, waken at the news, fairly jump out of the truck, camera in hand, and start photographing this critter!
I decided that if he was out there, he could protect me from this critter, and began photographing. Little did I realize how interesting the results would be!
*Tarantulas comprise a group of large and often hairy arachnids belonging to the Theraphosidae family of spiders, of which around 1000 species have been identified. This article only describes members of the Theraphosidae, although some other members of the same infraorder (Mygalomorphae) are commonly referred to as "tarantulas". Like all arthropods, the tarantula is an invertebrate that relies on an exoskeleton for muscular support.
Like other Arachnida, a tarantula’s body comprises two main parts, the prosoma (or cephalothorax) and the opisthosoma (or abdomen). The prosoma and opisthosoma are connected by the pedicel, or pregenital somite. This waist-like connecting piece is actually part of the prosoma and gives the opisthosoma a wide range of motion relative to the prosoma. Wikipedia

I grew up in the Rio Grande Valley, about 8 miles from Mexico. When my daddy would irrigate the yard, dozens of these things would come out from beneath rocks. They were huge. We were not scared to them, but maybe we should have been. I think all they wanted was to be left along. Brings back memories. Love the photograph. Glad you stopped.

Thanks.....how much fun. Being with my Dad, we also did wonderful things like that. He would hold his shovel as we walked the orchards. When he would stop and hold his are in front of me, I would immediately stop, be quiet, and follow his finger to what he saw. We saw so much! Yes...memories galore!
