Description
Macro photography of Syrphus ribesii (hoverfly, Diptera) standing on its back legs on a succisa pratensis flower (devil's-bit scabious).
Syrphus ribesii is a very common Holarctic species of hoverfly. Its larvae feed on aphids. Note that the hoverfly is covered by a white powder – pollen, which attests hoverfly relevant role in pollination. Without pollination, we would do not have any fruits and vegetables in the supermarket.
Of relevance is that the European Union legislation, recently, set the legal base to recover the endemic European insect populations by lowering the uses of pesticides to radical minimum amounts (pesticides produce cancer).
