Swirling Monster
Artist
Sam Persons
Medium
Pastel - Soft Pastel On Paper
Description
How many have suffered in silence from the ravages of the varied and sometimes deadly effects of the monster that is mental illness? This drawing is dedicated to all the people I have known over the years who have been affected by the swirling monster.
As the inner darkness of being misunderstood and mistreated spreads its dark blue tentacles of depression and hopelessness through the individuals’ mind and heart, it draws even more strength from the fuchsia hurt and deep purple pain that can be caused by abuse and neglect during the formative years. As the monster takes over more and more of the person’s consciousness, bits of red anger start flying off and affecting other’s as well.
But there is still a small yellow glimmering window of hope, held out by a true friend and companion. They are willing to help this person no matter what, even if at first the person may have almost given up hope in themselves and others. But the person has to be willing to get the help needed to slowly rip this monster out of their head and heart. The swirling monster of mental illness may never completely go away and it’s strength may ebb and flow throughout the person’s life. But there is still hope with a true friend by your side and never letting go of the will to fight.

My swirling monster is always at the edge of my peripheral vision. I read the Buddha’s Fire Sermon to make them fade away.

Being a retired teacher, I've seen children struggle with this monster. Great artwork and description of the subject.
