Description
"Supermoon Moonset Over Marathon, Florida" by Catherine Sherman.
A fishing boat heads out for the day.
In the western sky, a supermoon hangs over Marathon, Florida, in the Florida Keys as it is above to slip below the horizon on the morning of February 19 in its closest distance to the earth in 2019.
Supermoon is a popularized term for what astronomers call a full moon near perigee, or closest to Earth. The February 2019 full moon reached its exact full phase closer to the time of perigee than it will during any other full moon in 2019. Hence the year’s closest supermoon. Tides are higher and moonlight is brighter during a supermoon event.
On February 19, 2019, the moon was at a distance of 356,846 km (221,734 miles). Each full moon for the next seven months in 2019 will occur farther away than the one in the previous month. Seven full moons later, on September 14, 2019, this full moon will be the one to most closely align with lunar apogee – the moon’s most distant point from Earth in its orbit. Thereby, September 2019 will stage the most distant full moon of 2019.
