Description
When it snows on Mauna Kea, I do everything in my power to go to the summit and marvel at the exraordinary beauty of snow on this volcano. It is not always easy to go. During strong winter storms that blow down from the Arctic, the winds can be howling 60 miles an hour or more, which makes the perilously steep 4-wheel drive only road to dangerous to drive. The weather can change in minutes and you can be engulfed in new snowstorms. On this day, there were very few people who had driven to the summit. I hiked out onto the lip of the actual cone that is the summit, while below me the sun rose through swirling clouds and an obviously rising new storm. The beautiful golden light spread across the snow with a delicate frosting.
