Strangler Fig Tree
Artist
Rob Hemphill
Medium

Description
The Strangler Fig or Giant Banyan Tree throttles its host tree and attempts to crush walls and foundations of any structures in its path. Here at Ta Prohm in Angkor Wat, this tree attempts to obliterate the beautiful reliefs or carvings that adorn the temple.
One factor that has enhanced the growth of the trees at Angkor Wat is the unique property of the stones that were used to building the temples. These temples are made of sandstone which is porous in nature which enables the roots to extract water from the stones.
