Description
This digital photograph features the statue of Admiral John Paul Jones, created by Walker Hancock. The statue was installed on the grounds of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1957. Jones, a very interesting historical figure, is considered to be the individual who founded the American naval tradition. He was born in Scotland, went to sea at twelve years old, and after a series of events, came to Philadelphia in 1775. Upon receiving a commission for the Continental Navy, Jones went on to become a daring hero in raids on the British. He even served, at one point following this, for Catherine the Great as a Russian rear admiral fighting the Turks. His remains are located in the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
