Description
Stahleck Castle was built in the Upper Rhine Valley around the 12th century. The castle was situated on a crag approximately 520 feet above sea level and is one of the only castles in Germany with a water filled moat that partially surrounds the castle. Built on the orders of the Archbishop of Cologne, it stood guard over the area until it was destroyed in the 17th century. Today, it has been rebuilt and operates as a hostel. Many of the castles built along the Rhine river were there to serve as "toll booths" for passing merchants along the Rhine. They would charge a tax for safe passage and this became such a popular practice that you will see a castle every couple of miles along the Rhine River Valley today.
