Description
This is the view from the hills above Mylor Bridge and Restronguet over the Tregothnan Estate, the place where the tea is produced, towards St Austell where the china clay is produced. Quite a sight on a cold day in February. I checked when I got home and the hills are just over 23 miles away as the crow flies.
Tregothnan Estate near Truro, home to the same family since 1335, has the largest historic garden in Cornwall and has had the only tea plantation in the UK since 2005.
St Austell was already an important mining town when, in in the mid 18th century, massive deposits of kaolin (a form of decomposed granite), or china clay was discovered in the area. The mineral is used in not only the production of porcelain but a whole host of industries including paper, pharmaceuticals and textiles. The extraction of china clay became the mainstay of local industry and accelerated the growth of the town from the eighteenth century onwards.
