Description
Skunk Bay Lighthouse was built in 1965 by Jim Gibbs. He had rescued the lantern room from the old lighthouse at Smith Island, Washington when it was condemned. Soon thereafter, this lighthouse collapsed into the sea because of severe erosion.
Mr. Gibbs built the privately owned lighthouse at Skunk Bay using the Mukilteo, Washington plans. While both look much the same, there are differences in the towers. Nonetheless, the Skunk Bay Lighthouse has a charming history.
After inadvertently leaving the beacon lit one night, Mr. Gibbs was paid a visit by very stern people from the U.S. Coast Guard. They told him, in no uncertain terms, if he wanted to be a lighthouse keeper, he had to follow their rules: otherwise the light was never to be turned on again. He applied for the necessary permits and became a private lighthouse keeper in 1965. This lighthouse has been an active navigational aid since.
The guard shack is actually an outhouse! Mr. Gibbs has a sense of humor.
Skunk Bay Lighthouse is now owned and maintained by a group of 12 people who take turns using the facility and keeping things up to snuff. They take immense pride in their lighthouse.
The other lighthouse at Hansville, Washington is Point No Point.
It should also be noted, Jim Gibbs is a maritime historian and published author. He has also built a private lighthouse in Oregon.
