Description
A beautiful drive in Shenandoah National Park brings you to an overlook of The Massanutten. The signs explaining the site were a bit worn out so it wasn't clear what was what at this overlook! The sign wasn't even helpful about the name, since it said the origin of the name Massanutten is unclear. According to the sign "the high point near the end of the Massanutten is Signal Knob" which was used by Confederate soldiers as an observation and signal post. Message signals were relayed to stations farther south, and on to Richmond. The Union arm may have used Signal Knob for brief periods as well. It's interesting just to close your eyes and imagine life and the state of warfare communications a century and a half ago. The long ridges in the formation are due to Massanutten sandstone which is more resistant to erosion, while softer layers eroded to form the lower areas. Whatever the explanation, the view is wonderful!
