Description

In northwestern Sicily between Palermo and Trapani lies the archeological park of Segesta. This Doric temple at the site perches on a beautiful hillside surrounded by rolling green countryside and in the springtime lots of wildflowers. It has been gracing this location since between 430 and 420 BCE. But even with the main structure seemingly in place, several architectural elements suggest that the temple was never finished, likely due to war between Segesta and Selinunte. The columns have not been fluted as they normally would have been in a Doric temple, and there are still bosses present in the blocks of the base (used for lifting the blocks into place but then normally removed). The temple also lacks any ornamentation, altar or deity dedication, and was never roofed over. The temple measures 21 by 56 metres, on a platform three steps high.
