This sea otter was having a restful float in the bay near Seward Alaska, just watching the boats go by. Sea otters are the largest members of the weasel family, and cute as they are, they are related to skunks. Sea otters average four to five feet long and weigh 80 pounds, but they can be as much as six feet and 100 pounds. Sea otters do not have blubber but they have luxuriously soft fur that keeps them warm. Sea otters were nearly hunted to extinction for their fur in the 1700s and 1800s first by the Russians and then by the Americans. In 1911 they were protected by international treaty and later by the Marine Mammal Protection act in the US. Ninety percent of the world's sea otters live in coastal Alaska.
