Description
Photographic artwork by Cindy Treger, photographed at Rodanthe, NC. Sea oats (Uniola paniculata) is a tall subtropical grass that can be found growing along the beach. In late summer its seed heads turn golden brown. Its tall leaves and deep rhizomes root system helps to promote sand dune growth by trapping wind-blown sand. Sea oats protect beaches from high winds, tides and storm surges, along with providing shelter for small animals, insects and birds.
