Description
Located next to the Town Hall in the beautiful Piazza della Repubblica, the Church of Sant’Andrea and San Bartolomeo is the oldest place of Christian worship Orvieto Italy, as it arose in the sixth century on the ruins of a pre-existing Etruscan temple. Historically significant particularly before the establishment of the Il Duomo in the 14th century, the appointments of cardinals and Pope Martin IV, Nicholas IV, and Boniface VIII, took place in this church. For better or worse, the Fourth Crusade was announced here in 1216 by Pope Innocent III. Like most older buildings, it has undergone significant architectural changes over time. The portal (1487) survives from an earlier restoration, although the terracotta relief of the Madonna and Child with SS Andrew and Bartholomew above the door was executed in 1928. The 12-sided tower (12th century) to the right of the façade was probably originally the Torre Civica, and adapted in 1216-20 to form the campanile of the church. It collapsed in 1514 and was presumably rebuilt thereafter. Both the façade of the church and the tower are said to have been ‘over-restored’ and ‘mutilated’ by restorations in 1926-30.

The clouds in the background provide dramatic scope and textural contrast to the incredible architecture in the foreground.
