I was looking for a day trip from Bilbao Spain and ran across photos of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. There was no question, I was going there. I hoped it was ‘off the beaten path’ and would be a great little hike to a gorgeous site but then discovered the site had been used in one of the seasons of Game of Thrones. I am one of the few people on the planet who knows nothing about Game of Thrones, but I did know this: this was not going to be an ‘off the beaten path’ location! This became evident when I saw the reservation system online where you can reserve a time to visit (luckily, it was not needed in January). So in January, it was still a relatively peaceful place. Gaztelugatxe is an islet on the coast of Biscay near the town of Bakio with the wild Bay of Biscay all around. It is connected to the mainland by a man-made bridge. The hermitage at the top sits 80 meters above sea level. It is named Gaztelugatxeko Doniene in Basque or San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in Spanish, and is dedicated to John the Baptist. There are some indications that it might date from the 9th century, but firmer evidence of its existence in the 10th century. The winding path to the top has 241 steps but the most difficult thing about visiting the island is learning how to pronounce and/or spell it!
