The skyline of the Tuscan town of San Gimignano Italy glows in the early morning hours just before sunrise. The skyline of medieval towers dates from the Middle Ages when feuding noble families ran the hilltop towns and used the towers as protection from one another. Some towers, however, were simply structures to boost noble egos, as in ‘my tower is bigger than your tower’. San Gimignano is unique in Tuscany for the number of surviving medieval towers. The Historic Centre of San Gimignano is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
