Description
Salt Plains Dig Area For Crystals ©Debra Martz Salt covers over 11,000 acres of the Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge near Cherokee and Jet, Oklahoma. According to their website, "It is designated as the largest saline flat in the central lowlands of North America." From April 1 through October 15 the public is allowed entry to designated parts of this acreage for the purpose of digging for the State's crystal; selenite crystals with an hour-glass shape are the most coveted. This is Oct 12th, almost the end of dig season. A new area will be open for the public to dig the next year while this area will level out from wind and rain plus regenerate more crystals in the coming years. It's closed to the public during fall through spring bird migrations as a large number of waterfowl, breeding birds plus endangered and at risk species stop here for the nutrients.
