Description
Glacier Bay National Park is a highlight of Alaska's Inside Passage and part of a 25-million acre World Heritage Site. It locates in southeast Alaska and covers 3.3 million acres of rugged mountains, dynamic glaciers, temperate rainforest, wild coastlines and deep sheltered fjords. Glacier Bay offers spectacular views, breathtaking moments, and true solitude often lost in today's busy society. This popular destination for Alaskan cruises offers a glimpse of the ever-changing nature of glacier areas, as they recede and expand with the changing seasons. The Park is named for its abundant tidewater and terrestrial glaciers, numbering 1,045 in total. There are seven tidewater glaciers in the park: Gilman Glacier, Grand Pacific Glacier, Johns Hopkins Glacier, LaPerouse Glacier, Lamplugh Glacier, Margerie Glacier and McBride Glacier. Margerie Glacier is a 21 mile long tidewater glacier in Glacier Bay, Alaska, United States within the boundaries of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. Its source is on the southern slopes of Mount Root. The width of the glacier is about 1 mile and the total height is about 350 feet including 100 feet that is underwater. It is most visited due to cruise ships.
As marine waters make up nearly one-fifth of the park, Glacier Bay is rich with marine life, including the endangered humpback whale, orcas, threatened Stellar sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters and porpoises. In addition to marine mammals, Glacier Bay is home to a large bear population, both brown and black, as well as the blue glacier bear, a rare color phase of the black. Moose, wolves, Sitka black tail deer, mountain goats and bald eagle also thrive in the park.
