Description
As a two-year old girl, Sadako survived the atomic bomb blast in Hiroshima. Nine years later she developed leukemia. She waged a heroic battle against the disease. During her battle she folded over one thousand origami cranes, heeding the advice of an old Japanese folk story that doing so would bring her a wish.
she wished not only for her own health but also for world peace. In a brief poem she penned the words, "I shall write peace on your wings and you shall fly all over the world." Despite her courage and grace, Sadako could not beat leukemia but her legacy lives on as the origami crane has become an international symbol of peace.
