Description
The gentle sounds and sights of the country bring peace to the soul.
On a warm summer day, a small country farm herd of cows rests in the field, chewing their cud and ruminating.
When we say, “I’ll ruminate over that,” it brings to mind this sense of resting in one spot, thinking over an issue or situation, and not being in a hurry about it. After all, for ruminant animals like cows and goats, the action of chewing one’s cud is one that cannot be hurried. It happens at a certain pace, and takes a requisite amount of time.
This is well worth our remembering and reflecting (or ruminating) upon, especially as we operate within a society that is always in a hurry, always demanding that something be done quickly, always insistent that we produce produce produce. Within such an environment, it is difficult to take the time we so desperately need to think, to ponder, to wonder, to imagine, to question, to dream, to daydream. If we were ruminants, we would be unhealthy ones indeed, living in such a way that is counteractive to the way we were designed.
And while we are not cows, it is worth wondering: Are we consistently living in a way that is counteractive to the way we were designed to live?
The artwork, Rumination, is an invitation for us to step into the life of the country animals, to rest among them and listen to the quiet sounds of their chewing, the gentle breeze blowing through the leaves of the trees, the occasional bird song that chirrups through the air. If we scurry around, anxious and busy, we attract the baleful stare of these cows, a calm consideration in their eyes that seems to say, “These humans – do they ever just . . . stop?”
Enter the world of Rumination and take a break from the busy-ness of being busy.

The soft colors seem so right for this peaceful image!
Steve Henderson replied:
Exactly. That changing atmosphere in accordance with the changing subject matter is certainly a major consideration in painting. Thank you for noticing, David.

It looks like such a peaceful life for a cow. Until i think about the part about getting up at 430 and having a strange man milk my nipples. Yeah, being human is definitely a better deal :D :D
Steve Henderson replied:
Quite the philosophical musing — never really thought about that from a cow’s perspective. Thank you, Monte.

Do we not all yearn to find ourselves in a spot of such peacefulness ?
Steve Henderson replied:
Yes, indeed, we do, Joe. Thank you for reminding us all to seek those peaceful places — wherever we find ourselves.

Couldn't agree more with first sentence of your description. Wonderfully paint to promote that sense of peace.
