Description
Royal Tern On The Lookout At De Soto Park,
This cutie is common throughout the U.S. and in the Caribbean. What is this bird? It is called Royal Tern (Thalasseus maximus). This is a seabird in the tern family Sternidae.
Royal Tern comes from Ancient Greek Thalasseus, "fisherman", from thalassa, "sea".
What I found interesting in learning about the Royal Tern, is that this bird actually has two distinctive subspecies: T.M. Maximus which lives on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the North and South America, and the slightly smaller T.M. Albididorsalis lives on the coast of West Africa.
As you can see from this scene, the Royal Tern has a golden-orange bill and a black cap during the breeding season; in the winter the cap becomes patchy.
Where can you find these cute birds? Europe, Africa, the Americas, and the Caribbean islands. The royal tern lives on the coast and is only found near salt water. They tend to feed near the shore, close to the beach or in backwater bays. These are great birds to observe and photograph. Fun to watch. Emmy Vickers,

Great capture, Emmy, of this beautiful tern catching some sun at Ft. DeSoto. A favorite place to visit. L/fv
