Description
The Royal River is a small thirty nine mile river originating in the Sabbath Day Lake in New Gloucester Maine and ending in Casco Bay in Yarmouth Maine. It is a working river with many people bringing their boats back and forth from the ocean to Yarmouth. It was the home Forest Paper Company in 1872. The Royal River provided power for the mill. My great grandfather, Joseph McKearney, would harvest ice from the River in the winter months which would be shipped down to New York City and Boston to keep ice boxes cool for people's provisions! But before they harvested the ice, they would have horse races on the river! They would plow the snow and run the horses up and down the riverbank! Oi, no thank you! But winters really were colder then and they didn't have to worry about falling into the river. This portion of the river is located at the Spear Farm Estuary which is protected land in Yarmouth. It's a wonderful place to walk and enjoy a bit of nature! I named this image Royal River Silver Waters because the river looks silver!
