Description
"Rosenborg Castle and Moat, Copenhagen, Denmark" by Catherine Sherman.
Visitors to Rosenborg Castle grounds can cross a bridge over a moat. The moat around the Castle premises is the remains of the old rampart and city moat that surrounded Copenhagen, Denmark..
Rosenborg Castle (Danish: Rosenborg Slot) a renaissance castle, was originally built as a country summerhouse in 1606 and is an example of Christian IV's many architectural projects. It was built in the Dutch Renaissance style, typical of Danish buildings during this period, and has been expanded several times, finally evolving into its present condition by the year 1624.
King Christian IV is considered the most famous King in the list of Danish Sovereigns and was also a very popular and enterprising monarch. He ruled Denmark and Norway from 1588 until his death in 1648.
The castle, now state property, was opened to the public in 1838 as museum. The Crown Jewels, the Danish Crown Regalia and the Throne Chair of Denmark are located in the castle.
