Description
I think when you live in a city with narrow streets and several-story buildings that keep the streets in shade most of the day, your eyes are drawn skyward and you dream of sunlight! The same is true of this scene in Lucca Italy. It’s only 230 irresistible steps to the top of the Guinigi tower and some sunlight. It might look like a romantic rooftop garden but consider the history. The tower was built in or around 1384 by wealthy silk merchants. This and other towers were built during the mercenary-filled post-plague years in Italy, when Tuscany was repeatedly turned upside-down by disease, raids, and outbursts of politically-charged violence. If you were wealthy, you could afford your own personal defensive tower. At one time there were as many as 250 of these towers but today only about 9 remain. It is not known when the Holm oak trees were planted but they date back to at least 1600 when they appear in a contemporary drawing of the city. Today, the rooftop garden affords a great view of the cityscape and the surrounding countryside.
