You can imagine the geologic turmoil that produced all the layers of rock, all at crazy angles to one another. This conglomeration of rock layers was seen along the trail to Hickman Bridge in Capitol Reef National Park, near Torrey Utah. The rock formations are due to a geologic formation called the Waterpocket Fold that was formed 65 million years ago, probably at the same time the colliding of continental plates created the Rocky Mountains. The contrasting layers of stone and earth, the sandstone cliffs, and the canyons, domes and bridges in the park are a photographic paradise! Capitol Reef National Park lies in Utah’s south-central desert. The area was designated as a national monument in 1937 but not actually opened to the public until 1950. It was reclassified as a national park in 1971.
