Description
Roadside wildflowers Spanish Broom (Spartium junceum) and Poodle-dog bush (Common turricula, Turricula parryi) backlit by morning sunlight, San Gabriel Mountains, California. In the background are trees burnt by wildfires a few years before I captured this picture.
The wildfires caused scorched hillsides and blackened skeletons of trees and chaparral bush. However, the wildfires opened up canopies, providing sunlight where previously there was only shade and the ash from burnt trees returned essential minerals to depleted soils near the trees. The spring rain the following years encouraged wildflower seeds that were dormant for years to sprout, arising from the ashes. Such a profusion of these "fire-followers," like the Spanish Broom and Poodle-dog flowers in this photo, had not been seen in the area for decades. I am always amazed at nature’s capacity to heal itself.
I was attracted to this view by the color contrast between the yellow Spanish Broom flowers in the foreground and rows upon rows of bluish Poodle-dog flowers beyond, nicely anchored by burnt trees in the middle.
