Description
"Reddish Egret Shielding" by Patti Deters. This Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens) is foraging in coastal mudflats in the Everglades National Park, standing in the murky green waters of a mangrove forest. Her wings are outstretched as a way to shield the bright sun from reflecting in the swampy backwaters of the estuary, allowing her to see underwater prey more easily. Reddish Egrets are smaller than a great egret or great blue heron, and males and females look very similar. These water birds are part of the heron family and are considered somewhat rare. In fact there less than 300 pairs to be found in Florida, with numbers declining annually. Still, when you do find one of these elusive birds, they are fun to watch because of the very active way they jump around when they forage. This photograph has a light texture added for artistic effect. If you like this outdoor nature artwork, please see (wildlife, animal, fauna, painterly, more) at patti-deters.pixels.com.
