Red Heliconius Hecale Butterfly

Description
This is a red colored heliconius hecale butterfly drinking from a flower. Instead of eating, butterflies get their nurishment from drinking. They have a long narrow tube in their mouth called a proboscis that acts as a straw. They usually set on top of a flower and drink the nectar, but it can basically be anything that dissolves in water like tree sap, dung, pollen or rotten fruit. They are attracted to sodium found in salt and sweat. This is why they sometimes even land on people in Butterfly Parks. Sodium as well as many other minerals is vital for the butterflies reproduction.

Gorgeous shot, Tim. Mostly I see 'koolwitjes' in my garden, and they never seem to land anywhere. Will have to take time to visit a flower garden when the crazy traffic of summer is done. There is a lovely dahlia garden 45 min. from here. lf
Tim Abeln replied:
I believe you have a good chance of finding monarch butterflies on some types of Dahlia. Sounds like a great idea and I look forward to see your photos! ;) Thank you l'ina!

You are so welcome Tim it was my pleasure! Thank you so much Tim for the advice. I do get to see them in the wild here and there and I have captured a few of them myself. Have even videoed them with my iPhone. There is a wonderful butterfly atrium in Scottsdale Arizona. Quite world-famous actually. If I lived in that part of Arizona I would have an annual membership and be going there as often as I possibly could! So I will just have to make the two hour trip to visit this place. I don't like the trip there by way of Interstate Highway, always having car accidents and blowing dust storms! But I will just have to suck it up and do it!!

Tim this is absolutely breathtaking! Of course butterflies are my favorite things in life! I so enjoyed reading your description about this particular butterfly. They exude such beauty and elegance, an absolute delight to all the senses! Wish I could view such fabulous butterflies in person, would be such an absolute treat for me to do so and then try to capture them and all their beauty. I guess I will have to resign myself to visiting yours and others galleries to do so!! 💕And favorite Janet
Tim Abeln replied:
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment Janet! If you wish to see these kinds of butterflies, maybe try and find a butterfly park/garden nearby? Maybe they have one in the zoo or sometimes near a big gardening center for tropical flowers? The experience is maybe even better than seeing them in the wild, because there are so many concentrated in a relatively small space. Hope you will see them live sometime soon, but I will make sure to keep posting butterfly pictures now and then ;)
