Description
"Queen Zenobia Addressing Her Soldiers" by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.
Queen Zenobia ruled over Palmyra, in Syria, in the third century CE. At the time, Palmyra had a well-known oasis for travelers voyaging between the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean Sea. It had also grown to become a small, prosperous empire of its own.
After the assassination of Zenobia's husband Odenathus in 267 CE, the Queen ruled Palmyra as regent until her son became of age. After assuming power, she challenged the Roman Empire's authority in Palmyra. She became a female warrior as well, leading her army to victories against the Romans in Egypt and Asia Minor. After claiming Palmyra's independence from Rome, Emperor Aurelian sent armies to attack her armies and Palmyra itself.
This painting depicts Zenobia addressing her soldiers before the final battle. Unfortunately, her empire fell to Rome and she was captured as she was trying to flee Palmyra. No one is sure exactly what happened to her after that. Some scholars believe that she was transported back to Rome and imprisoned, while others believed that she ended her life by starvation while being transported to Rome. Palmyra was soon destroyed and her legacy became the substance of legend.
