Description
Spring flowers sing for joy, inviting the viewer for a garden stroll.
The garden is always a delightful place for a stroll, and on a warm sunny day, the parasol is a fashion item that adds a sense of vintage nostalgia to the scene. Painted in a lightly impressionistic style, Promenade introduces the viewer to a young woman in a deep, cobalt blue dress that is a happy jubilation of color in itself.
She walks serenely, sedately through the paths, with the slightest attitude of playful whimsy, as evidenced by the tilt of her head, a secret smile, and eyes glancing to the side. Set gracefully to her side, her hands adopt the attitude of the dancer, and she moves as a dancer through her space.
Is she here to meet someone? Does she see that someone in the area just behind us, out of our view but well within hers? Why is she smiling?
Because this is a representational painting, it opens itself to a series of questions, a wondering as we build a story around the scene. What that story is, is unique to each viewer, and the story itself can and does change each time the viewer encounters the painting – at evening, after a long day; in the morning, before the first cup of coffee; in the middle of the afternoon, providing a mental respite from the day’s tasks and obligations.
Promenade invites the viewer to join the young woman in the garden, serenely walking on that wending, winding path. Our hands, along with hers, lightly brush against the leafy foliage, and faintly, over the slight sound of the breeze, we hear the buzzing of insects and the occasional trilling of a bird.
“Welcome to spring,” Promenade sings out. “Slow down from what you are doing; open the parasol so that it protects you from the sun overhead; and walk in the garden for a moment, relishing the day!”
