The pink-backed pelican is found throughout sub-Saharan Africa and frequent a variety of aquatic habitats where the water is shallow such as lakes, dams, rivers, and lagoons. These quiet areas provide vegetation and fish.
They are one of the smallest of the eight pelican species. They are social pelicans that roost together at night and will nest together in small groups or large colonies of up to 500 pairs. During the day, they can be seen bathing and preening. But when meal time comes and they head out to fish, they will do it alone or in a very small group.
