Title
Perched Dragonfly At St. Marks
Artist
Carla Parris

Photograph - Digital Photograph
Description
This painterly style image features a four-spotted pennant dragonfly against a textured background in warm tones of gold, peach, and aqua.
The original photograph was captured at St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge in Wakulla County in northwest Florida.
Dragonflies, along with damselflies, are insects belonging to the biological order Odonata. These insects have four wings and an elongated body. Their heads are dominated by extremely large multifaceted eyes which allow the insect to see in almost every direction except directly behind..
Despite their delicate appearance, the veined transparent wings of dragonflies are very strong and grant the insect extraordinary maneuverability. The four wings operate independently, allowing the insect to hover, fly forwards, backwards, sideways, and even upside down, and to change direction abruptly.
Unlike damselflies, when dragonflies are at rest, they hold their wings away from their bodies, positioned perpendicular to their torso.
Dragonflies frequent areas like St. Marks which have lakes, ponds, marshes, and wetlands. Their larvae, which are aquatic, are called “nymphs.”
This particular dragonfly, with his lovely bronze coloring, is a four-spotted pennant. He is perched lightly on a gracefully curved branch.
