Description
There were many reasons for wanting to paint these colourful birds, nostalgia being the most prominent one. After all, I grew up in the farming countryside in Punjab, India, where these birds roamed freely, occupying huge banyan trees and not afraid of strolling in the wheat and corn fields. On a hazy summer’s pre-dusk hours, their brilliant plumage would contrast against the almost harvest-ready crops. In the spring and summer months, their colours complimented the lush green fields, not quite blending in, but also not quite swallowed by a similarly coloured landscape. These birds were often characters in the stories of my childhood, part folklore, and part myth, including the one about them crying about the ugliness of their feet, while displaying their gorgeous feathers. This rendition is undoubtedly, a nostaligic attempt to recreate that carefree aspect of my childhood.
