Description
Spring is a time of intense greenery and growth, of new life, of waters swelling in the rivers as the snow pack melts and recedes.
The artwork, Palouse Falls Rush, invites the viewer to step into this spring landscape, regardless of whether it is snowy outside the viewer's home, or blazing hot. Set in Eastern Washington at Palouse Falls, a landmark waterfall that cascades 200 feet to the roiling pool below, Palouse Falls Rush celebrates the light, the warmth, the colors, and the promise of spring.
Always impressive, Palouse Falls in the springtime is especially so, as the increased water results in an almost roar of water flowing through the rock channels, forcing the water to conform to the geology of the landscape. But water is a powerful element, and does not benignly conform to the limitations placed upon it – whether those limitations are human-built dams or nature’s cliffs.
On the way to the falls, the increased water from the melting snow pack flows over the normal banks of the river, picking up soil, rocks, and detritus along the way. The result is a change in the color of water – from the normal “blue” or clear that we expect to almost sepia tones, interspersed within the foam and spray, adding an almost pinkish tone to the white.
Palouse Falls is an anomaly within the Eastern Washington landscape, which people normally presume to be filled with agricultural fields as well as plateaus. On the way to the falls, there is no clue that they are nearby, and indeed, driving along the less than smooth road to the state park, one begins to wonder if they exist at all.
But they do, and upon emerging from the car – before even seeing the falls – the traveler hears the roar of the water and is drawn toward the sound. The sight – Palouse Falls – is awe inspiring, majestic, and grand – a reminder that nature is big indeed.
