Description
The Painted Buntin, Passerina ciris, is a small North American bird with colors the easily rival those of exotic parrots found in tropical locations. The maies have a bright mixture of red, yellow, blue and green. Females are bright green and sport a pale eye ring. Immature Painted Buntings of both sexes are also a bright green color. These colorful songbirds breed in coastal Souteast and Southwestern areas, migrating to Central America and the Caribbean for winter.
The bird pictured here was photographed along the Tideland Trail at the Cedar Point Recreation area of the Croatan National Forest, eastern North Carolina. A popular place for joggers and bird watchers, the foot traffic can make thiese shy birds difficult to find on the weekends.
