Description
"Oyster Shells, Apalachicola, Florida" by Catherine Sherman.
Oyster shells serve as mulch in Apalachicola, Florida. The town is the Oyster Capital of the World. More than 90% of Florida's oyster production is harvested from Apalachicola Bay. The bay is protected by St. Vincent Island, Flag Island, Sand Island, St. George Island, and Cape St. George Island.
The Apalachicola River, which drains southern Georgia and much of northcentral Florida, brings nutrient rich water and sediment into the bay. The Apalachicola River is about 112 miles long in the state of Florida. The river's large watershed, known as the ACF River Basin, drains an area of approximately 19,500 square miles into the Gulf of Mexico. The distance to its farthest head waters in northeast Georgia is about 500 miles
The river is lined with protected cypress and tupelo tree swamps.
