Description
Osprey in a Tree Waiting For Prey
This osprey sits in a large, tall maple tree that is on the opposite bank of the McKenzie River. To the right of this tree is an even taller fir tree and just below the top an osprey pair have built a large nest. In the moorings and late afternoons this osprey can be found in this tree watching the river for prey. One of the pair is a very large osprey with a wide wingspan. I was astonished when at the wingspan when I was looking at an image where it was carrying a stock to build the nest. The other one is quite slight. It appears that they have had only one surviving chick. Because of the nest's height and inner depth, the chick was not seen until it began to practice flying.
The osprey and owl are the only two raptors where the outer toe is reversible allowing them to grasp prey with two twos in front and two in back.
A cropped and close-up of this osprey is also available in the Birds Gallery

Nature, animals, beauty have been a source of nourishment throughout my life. Photography allows me to capture, interpret, and share that world of wonder I see about me, and sometimes use what I capture as an inspiration to create something new, by incorporating other exposures, textures or brushwork.
