Built on the orders of King Oscar I and Queen Josephine, it was completed in 1852. today the pleasure castle stands as a monument of Norwegian art and art industry from the mid-1800s. The facility - with its main building, other buildings and the surrounding park - is considered the main work of the new Gothic in Norway and is one of the country's most important national romantic monuments.
