Description
West of Quechee Village, Vermont, the Ottauquechee River flows eastward within a broad and shallow valley. Just east of the village, the river turns abruptly southward and plunges into the narrow, rocky cleft of Quechee Gorge, formed by glacial activity approximately 13,000 years ago. The gorge is the deepest in Vermont, at 165 feet, and stretches over a mile in length.
A trail along along the edge of the gorge takes visitors down to river, where (when the water is low enough) you can walk out onto the rocks for lovely views to the north and south. In this image, we're near the southern end of the gorge, looking north toward the Vermont Route 4 bridge, with the cloudy skies and summer trees reflected in the water.
