Description
This wonderous flower is the native 'Ohi'a Lehua Mamo (polymetrosideros polymorphia). 'Ohi'a is a Native Hawaiian tree, that flowers in reds, yellows and more rarely, a salmon color. The word for 'yellow' in Hawaiian is 'mamo', hence, this is the yellow morph of the tree. Lehua is one of my very favorite flowers in Hawai'i, as when the flowers bloom, they look like minature firecrackers. Lehua flowers are prized for use in Haku leis, a type of lei that is worn like a crown on the head. The Lehua flower is the flower of Pele, the Volcano Goddess, as the most common red form looks like tiny fountains of lava.
