Gazing out to sea at Nugget Point on the Otago coast of the Catlins in New Zealand, you imagine Antarctica over the horizon. Waaayyyyy over the horizon, as in several thousand km. The feeling of being at the end of the world is strong! Nugget Point is one of the most iconic landforms in the area. The highlight may be the lighthouse, built in 1869-70, 9.5 metres high and situated 76 metres above sea level. It is easy to see why this area has been considered a significant danger to sea-going vessels trading along the coast. But equally mesmerizing is the sea action around the projection of land on which the lighthouse is located. When the wind is high and the sea is rough, the power of nature is on full display. You can tell in this photo that the wind was coming from the left and it was strong enough at the height of the viewing platform that you needed to wrap your arm around the railing to take a photo! The rocky islets are called ‘the nuggets’, supposedly due to their likeness to the shape of gold nuggets! The other highlight of the area is the wildlife. The point is home to many seabirds, including penguins, gannets and royal spoonbills, and a large breeding colony of fur seals.
