Description
There are some big oak trees in a wild area that edge a field meadow near me and many birds can be seen landing at the very top of the tree. This Northern Flicker bird was checking out the bark and looking for insects – you could can see the birds clearly when the Fall leaves fall off the tree and show the gnarled branches. We see these birds in north Texas when the weather gets cool for winter time.
Northern Flickers (Colaptes auratus) are in the Woodpecker family. They forage for food on the ground and in trees eating insects, seed and berries with their main diet of mostly ants.
