NJ Autumn Allamuchy State Park by Regina Geoghan. An early autumn landscape scene of a section of the NJ Allamuchy Mountains and wetlands grasses at the start of the fall foliage display. Allamuchy Mountain State Park lies in the uplands of northwest New Jersey encompassing three counties. Route 80 bisects the park dividing it into north and south sections. The Lenape Indians were the first inhabitants of the area. The mountains were named after the Lenape Chief Allamuchahokkingen which translates to "Place Within the Hills." The first settlement in the area was named thus and was later shortened to Allamucha in 1737. Much of the mountain area designated as the state park was once owned by descendant families of Peter Stuyvesant, namely the Rutherford and Stuyvesant families. The families created large estates in the mountains and in the 1970s, the state of New Jersey purchased the estates with Green Acres bond funds to create the state park. Allamuchy State Park is connected with Stephens State Park which is in the lowlands section of the Allamuchy Mountains.
